Anthropic has launched beta integrations that bring Claude into Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, expanding the assistant from a separate chat window into editing workflows inside Google's productivity applications. The Claude for Google Workspace add-on is available in public beta across paid Claude plans, while new connectors provide another route for creating and changing Google files from Claude itself.
The add-on opens Claude in a sidebar next to the active file. It can inspect the open document, spreadsheet or presentation, including selected text, cells or slides, and then propose or apply changes in place. In Docs, the assistant can revise a sentence, restyle headings or offer larger rewrites as individual suggestion cards that users can accept or dismiss.
Spreadsheet support includes formulas, pivot tables, native charts and additional tabs. For tasks such as joins or data cleaning, Claude can move a selected range through a Python workflow and return the result to the sheet. Anthropic says the assistant can also build reports from attached source files, organize teams into separate tabs and flag budget variances.
In Slides, Claude can generate pages using a presentation's existing layouts and themes rather than imposing a separate design. It can then check for overlapping elements, content extending beyond a slide and text that may be difficult to read. These checks aim to preserve the deck's visual system while reducing manual cleanup.
Users can choose how much autonomy the assistant receives. The default setting asks for approval before each edit and presents a summary of the proposed change. An alternative mode applies a sequence of edits without pausing. The sidebar carries over the same Claude models, connectors and reusable skills available to the signed-in account. Enterprise controls including audit export, customer-managed encryption keys and Anthropic's Compliance API also apply to the add-on, according to the announcement.
The separate Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors reverse the starting point. A user can begin inside Claude, paste a Google file link or request a new file, then work in a pane beside the conversation on supported setups. This approach is intended for projects spanning multiple files or beginning from an empty document. Access follows the user's existing Google sharing permissions.
Installation is handled through the Google Workspace Marketplace. Team and Enterprise administrators can deploy the add-on selectively, and an owner must enable the connectors before members can use them. Both products remain in beta, so organizations adopting them will need to evaluate their approval settings, file permissions and governance requirements alongside the promised reduction in application switching.
